Winter is Coming: 3 Ways to Combat Dry Skin

I don’t know about you, but not long after we get the heat rolling in our house, I find that my skin is dry and cracking.  The worst is when I wake up in the middle of the night and my feet and hands are dry.  Over the past couple years, I’ve figured out some things to help fight the dry skin of winter, because WINTER IS COMING (Game of Thrones reference for those of you wondering what that is about).

Run a humidifier, especially at night. Yes, I know it’s a pain to fill up that stupid tank every night before bed, but trust me on this one. Running a humidifier while you sleep is extremely helpful.  It helps restore moisture that has been sucked away by your heating system.  I like this humidifier. I have one in my bedroom and one in my daughter’s room.

Use a hand/body scrub. I love this recipe! I keep this by my kitchen and bathroom sinks and I have one at my bathtub.

Coconut Salt Scrub

Ingredients:

  1. 1 cup organic virgin coconut oil
  2. 1 cup Pink Himalayan (or Epsom) salt
  3. 1/4 cup Fractionated Coconut Oil
  4. 15 drops of your favorite essential oil

Directions: Melt coconut oil in a glass measuring cup.  Add salt and fractionated coconut oil.  Stir until combined.  Add essential oils.  Place in the refrigerator to cool for about 10 minutes, stirring occasionally. Store in an airtight container.  To use, rub on skin with a little water and then rinse.

Use a good quality body butter.  I use the recipe below. I highly recommend doing a double batch. Lots of shea butter recipes tend to have a greasy finish. This one does not.  I have a jar of it in my bathroom and one by my bed.

Ingredients:

  1. 1/2 cup shea butter
  2. 2 Tablespoons of almond or jojoba oil
  3. 15 drops of your favorite essential oil

Directions: Melt shea butter and oil in a double burner. Put the bowl in the fridge for about 15 minutes. The mixture should just start to solidify and be translucent (don’t let it completely harden or you will have to start all over). Add in your essential oils of choice. Using a stand or handheld mixer, mix on medium high until the mixture becomes whipped and creamy.  Transfer to a glass jar.

Tip: For best results do 2-3 batches at a time. This allows your mixer to whip the product a little better.

Transitioning Your Skincare for Fall/Winter

September 22, 2024

A while back, I wrote a post about switching up your skincare routine for summer. It can be so very frustrating to think you've gotten your skin figured out only for the season to change and it's almost like you're starting over at ground zero. The truth is that our skin can actually be very different depending on the season. My skin is oilier in the summer and super dry in the winter ...

Have you heard all the buzz about double cleansing? Below you'll find a basic how-to and defense for double cleansing (with Some Call Me Crunchy product suggestions, of course)!

Why double cleanse?

Double Cleansing is a must because having a clean canvas to apply toners and skin nourishing serums is very important. If you spend lots of money on serums and hydrating creams, but your skin isn't clean, those powerhouse products won't actually do very much...
