Wild by Cheryl Strayed

Wild by Cheryl Strayed

At the age of twenty-six, Cheryl Strayed pretty much believed that she had nothing else to lose. Her life seemed to be spiraling into a deeper and darker pit that began its downward slope with the death of her mother four years prior. Her marriage to a man she truly loved was ending and she had spent many days having sex with different men and using heroin.  On a random stop at an REI store, she ran across about book about the Pacific Crest Trail that spread from the Mexico/California border to the Washington/Canadian border.  Even though she lacked proper experience and training, Cheryl made an impulsive decision to hike over 1,000 miles of the trail in attempts to finally face her grief and pain. From that experience comes this beautiful tale of a women seeking to find herself and survive the tumultuous terrain of the PCT.

My Thoughts:

I have to admit that I wasn’t quite sure I would enjoy this book. I couldn’t imagine that a book about a women hiking 1,000 miles could be all that exciting. Boy was I was wrong about that. This book had me sitting on the edge of my seat wondering what would happen to Cheryl from chapter to chapter. The healing process that she allowed her readers to witness is powerful and seeing her survive something that she wasn’t prepared for is truly inspiring. It also made this non-camper want to jump on the PCT or Appalachian Trail and hike a few hundred miles myself. I can’t recommend this book enough and I am super eager to watch the movie.

This is book 1/40 for my 2016 Reading Challenge and falls into the New York Times Best Seller category.

One of the first ways I began using essential oils was to create my own cleaning products. One of the ...
