Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard

September 27, 2015

10212034In this futuristic world, society is divided into reds and silvers.  The reds are poor commoners who are ruled by the god-like silvers that possess unique powers.  The reds live in slums, work in jobs that serve the needs of the silvers, and are sent to fight a never-ending war when they turn eighteen.  The silvers live in lavish homes and never have to think about where their next meal might come from. Mare Barrow, a seventeen year-old red, who pickpockets to help her family survive is close to the conscription age and believes that there is no way out of it.  Her three brothers have already been sent to war and she can only count down the days for her turn to come.  To her surprise, one day officials come and take Mare from her home and assign her to a job at the Silver Palace. She finds herself amongst the people she hates, but is glad to have a job that keeps her from the war and helps provide for her family.  In her first days at the palace, Mare discovers that she herself has powers like the silvers, but is an anomaly because she still bleeds red.  In an attempt to conceal her, the king and queen make up a story to conceal the truth about who she really is and Mare finds herself thrown into nobility overnight.

My Thoughts:

After reading many of the dystopian series that have come out in the last handful of years (The Hunger Games, Divergent, Delirium, Legend, etc.), I continued to search for more similar stories only to find that many of them were repetitive.  I started reading Red Queen with the assumption that it wouldn’t be as good as many of the originals.  I was quickly proven wrong and flew through this book in just a couple of days.  I was constantly left trying to figure out what would happen next and wondering just who could be trusted.  If you are in need of another fictional futuristic world in which to immerse yourself in, I highly recommend this one. Book 2 will be released in February 2016.

Transitioning Your Skincare for Fall/Winter

September 22, 2024

A while back, I wrote a post about switching up your skincare routine for summer. It can be so very frustrating to think you've gotten your skin figured out only for the season to change and it's almost like you're starting over at ground zero. The truth is that our skin can actually be very different depending on the season. My skin is oilier in the summer and super dry in the winter ...

Have you heard all the buzz about double cleansing? Below you'll find a basic how-to and defense for double cleansing (with Some Call Me Crunchy product suggestions, of course)!

Why double cleanse?

Double Cleansing is a must because having a clean canvas to apply toners and skin nourishing serums is very important. If you spend lots of money on serums and hydrating creams, but your skin isn't clean, those powerhouse products won't actually do very much...
