How To: Buttered Coffee

IMG_4563I’m sure many of you are probably wondering, “What in the world is buttered coffee?”.  I learned about this type of coffee a few years ago and have found it to be extremely beneficial. It gives me the extra energy boost that I need for the day and doesn’t make me jittery. Buttered coffee uses organic coffee (no Folders allowed) blended with grass-fed butter and coconut oil.  Putting coconut oil and butter in your coffee probably sounds pretty crazy, but take a look below at the benefits of each of these ingredients. The recipe for making  will be at the bottom of the post.

Why do I need to use a good quality, organic coffee?  Why won’t something like Folders or Maxwell House work?  

Conventional coffee (like Folders and Maxwell House) is one of the most chemically treated foods in the world.  Many conventional coffees are treated with synthetic fertilizers,  pesticides, and insecticides.  When you buy and drink conventional coffee you are also drinking all of these horrible chemicals.  Organic coffees leave out these chemicals and instead use organic fertilizers (compost, chicken manure, coffee pulp, etc.). Is organic coffee more expensive?  Yes, it is.  But it is worth it for both health reasons and because it tastes WAY better.  My absolute favorite organic coffee to use is Counter Culture which is located in Raleigh, NC. You can purchase it through their website and it is also available in many health food stores and Harris Teeter grocery stores.

Why put grass-fed butter in your coffee? 

Grass-fed butter (butter made from cows that are only fed grass) is loaded with many vitamins that are lacking in grain-fed butters.  Some of these vitamins include vitamins K2, E, A, and D.  This type of butter is also an anti-inflammatory.  To find out more about grass-fed butter from someone way smarter than me, check out this article from Mark’s Daily Apple.  I use Kerrygold grass-fed butter, which I can find at Whole Foods, Trader Joes, and Costco.

What’s so great about coconut oil?  

Coconut oil gives you energy. It is made up of MCTs (medium chain triglycerides) which are quickly absorbed by your body and metabolized as fuel. Because of this, coconut oil also speeds up your metabolism.

Coconut oil contains Lauric Acid, which helps to boost you immune system.  Lauric acid is used to treat viral infections like influenza, the common cold, fever blisters, and yeast infections.

Have I convinced you to try it yet?  The final product is frothy and tastes like a latte. I add a little organic maple syrup to mine just to give it a little sweetness. Try it and let me know what you think!! 


How To: Buttered Coffee


  • 1 cup organic brewed coffee
  • 1 Tablespoon coconut oil
  • 1 Tablespoon grass-fed unsalted butter
  • dash of maple syrup, optional


  1. Add all of the ingredients to a blender and blend on high for about 20 seconds.  You should have a somewhat frothy mixture.  Pour into a mug and enjoy!
